A HISTORY

Green Cove Springs

The town site of Green Cove Springs is located on a 1,000 acre tract of land purchased in 1834 by David L. Palmer and Darius P. Ferris. This tract was carved out of a huge 16,000 acre mill grant made by the King of Spain to George I. F. Clarke, Formerly known as "White Sulphur Spring", its location on a picturesque cove of the St. Johns River with lush green vegetation and a mineral spring inspired Palmer and Ferris to name it Green Cove Springs. The city was first laid out and developed about 1856, It is beautifully centered around this crystal clear mineral spring. A world-traveled landscape artist once pronounced its location to be the most beautiful natural setting in Florida. The area became the sight of many fine hotels necessary to house the many visitors who came both summer and winter for the pleasure of the moderate winter climate and the physical benefit of the healthful mineral water. The village of Green Cove Springs became the county seat of Clay County in 1871 and became incorporated as a city in 1874.

The Spring

The flow of pure, clear and clean water is enormous, flowing at the rate of 3,000 gallons per minute. The constant year round temperature of 78 degrees made the spring a welcome attraction to its numerous winter visitors. It is surrounded by a natural park in which the beautiful magnolia, live oak and numerous varieties of evergreen trees abound. From this natural park you have an unobstructed view of the St. Johns River. The Spring Square was a part of the Qui-Si-Sana Hotel property until 1933 when it was deeded to the City of Green Cove Springs by Foremost Properties, the corporation of the late J. C. Penney.

The Fountain of Youth

A brochure printed in 1903 by the Green Cove Springs Board of Trade declared the white sulphur spring to be the Fountain of Youth for which Ponce de Leon was searching. The health giving water of the spring was recommended by specialists for rheumatism, arthritis, and other ailments. The house physician of the Claredon Hotel, Dr. Joseph W. Applegate, believed in the healthful properties of the spring water. In the 1870's the mineral water was bottled and sold in New York City by Harris and Applegate, the hotel proprietors. This mineral spring water flows constantly through a modern swimming pool out into the St. Johns River. A local lifetime resident, Mrs. Sarah Bardin Hallock, swam in the pool each day year round and lived to be of great age. Mr. A.P. Hallock, her husband, was the chemist who first made analysis of the spring water. It is no wonder that Green Cove Springs was once known as "The Health City".

Hub of the Universe

A gentleman from the state of Ohio visited Green Cove Springs several times for his health. He made the city his permanent residence in 1929. After bathing in the health giving water for 15 minutes twice a day for seven weeks, he was able to walk without the aid of his walking cane. He once said, "If the world only knew... Green Cove Springs, Florida would be the 'Hub of the Universe'."

ANOTHER Spring...

There is another spring flowing in Green Cove Springs. It is a life giving spring of Living Water, It flows into the human heart from the very presence of God. Jesus said, "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." If you will invite Jesus Christ into your heart He will give you this water. His life giving water will heal the heartache of the past, cleanse your heart from sin and give you everlasting life. Let Him come in today and put a life-giving healing spring in your soul.

The moment you invite Him, He will come and put His spring into your life. It will then begin to flow into a river of true peace, joy and love that no one or nothing else can give. If you only knew how much Jesus Christ loves you and wants to touch your heart and life you would jump in right now. Make the greatest decision of your life today!

Say this prayer...
"Lord Jesus Christ, be merciful unto me and forgive me of every sin I have ever committed. Come into my heart right now and give me your spring of living water. I surrender my heart and life to you. Change me today, and fill me with the Holy Spirit that I may live for you and walk with you. Amen!"
ABOUT THE CHURCH

Our local church was first organized in October of 1975 at the home of Mrs. Ruby Thacker, under the name Community Chapel Full Gospel Church. For several months regular church services were held in the home of Mrs. Melba Barrie. The church then rented a vacant church building from another religious denomination and later purchased the property along with another parcel of land on which the current sanctuary is located.

The congregation is experiencing a mighty refreshing of the Holy Spirit which began in a revival meeting held in November of 1992. Since that time the church has never been the same. God began to manifest his presence and power in a way never before experienced. The Holy Spirit filled the people with great joy, laughter, weeping, dancing, and a spirit of worship and praise like none previous. The move of the Holy Spirit has created a new vision and a new atmosphere in the church services. More people have come to know Christ as their personal savior during this time than in all the history of the church.

The name of the church no longer reflected what was happening in the lives of the people and was changed in 1996 to LIVING WATERS WORSHIP CENTER.
